About the event

Archaeology suggests a fascinating story of Germanic belief in the power of the sun – from a primary object of worship in the Bronze Age, to a revival of the sun and ship imagery in the early Iron Age, to an almost complete loss of those symbols in the 6th century. Yet, hints in the late Eddic and saga sources suggest a surviving chain of subtle solar symbolism reaching back thousands of years. We will explore evidence for early Heathen sun worship, possible causes for its disappearance, and questions that arise for the modern practitioner.
