Far from the post-Christian view of the Norse afterlife as a warrior’s paradise, Heathen cultures had complex and nuanced understandings of death. In a tradition well known for its fatalism, necromantic magic, revenant corpses, and ancestral inspiration, the Germanic worldview was deeply shaped by both its fear of and respect for the dead. We will explore how concepts of the world of the dead shaped early Heathen cosmology, some of the beings whose origin arises from their interactions with the dead, and the foundational death symbolism that underlies Heathen ritual.
